Larry F. Hodges received his B.A. degree with a double major in mathematics and physics from Elon University in 1974, the M.A. degree in Religion from Lancaster Theological Seminary in 1978, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science/Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1982 and 1986, respectively.  After completing his Ph.D. he joined the faculty of the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) where he was a founding member of the Graphics, Visualization and Usability (GVU) Center and the College of Computing.  From 2002 to 2008 he served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  Currently he is the hf Flagship Endowed Chair Director of the School of Computer at Clemson University.


In 1996 he, with research colleague Dr. Barbara Rothbaum of Emory University, founded Virtually Better, Inc., a company that specializes in creation, testing, and sales of virtual environments for clinical applications in psychiatry, psychology, and addiction. Virtually Better Therapy systems are currently in use by clinicians in many locations across the US and in eleven other countries. In 2006, Dr. Hodges was awarded the IEEE Virtual Reality Career Award for his work in clinical virtual reality. In 2007 he received the GVU Impact Award from Georgia Tech.


In addition to his research work in Clinical Applications of VR, Dr. Hodges has also maintained an active research agenda in numerous other areas of Virtual Reality, Virtual Humans, Visualization, and 3D User Interface Design with over 150 published papers.
