History 122 (taught every fall) examines topics in the history of technology with a focus on the impact of technology on society, not on the history of machines. See: History 122
History 124 (taught every spring) examines topics in environmental history and the different approaches that philosophers, policymakers, and historians have take to the environment. See: History 124
Calhoun Honors Seminars are interdisciplinary courses with a variety of topics. I have taught "Mill Towns North and South", The Space Age, The Millenium: Technology and Its Critics, 2001: The History of the Future, and American Forests.
History 322 is a history of technology from the stone age through the British industrial revolution. It puts particular emphasis on changing attitudes towards technology. See History 322
History 323 is a course in the history of American technology from covered bridges to the space program. The focus is not on how machines work but on the relationship between technology and society (and government). See: History 323 .
History 491 is a course whose topics vary; I taught History of the U.S. Space Program in Fall 1997 and spring 2004 and History of American Health Care in fall 2001 and fall 2003.
My 300 and 400 level courses are designed for anyone interested in the topic--you do not have to be an engineer or a history major, in fact it is ok if you have not taken any previous college history courses.

Professional Interests

I am coordinator of Science and Technology in Society at Clemson
My research interests are the history of technology and science, particularly the history of the U.S. space program and the history of women in science.
I am the author of Viewing the Earth: The Social Construction of the Landsat Satellite System (Cambridge: MIT Press, 1990). The MIT Press Home Page
A book I edited and wrote two chapters of-- From Engineering Science To Big Science: Collier Trophy Winners at the NACA and NASA--was published by NASA in 1998. For information on NASA History books published by the Government Printing Office see NASA History Books . The complete text is also available online.
I'm working on women in engineering and have written: "What Difference Has Feminism Made to Engineering in the Twentieth Century" published in: Feminism in Twentieth Century Science, Technology and Medicine edited by Angela N. H. Creager, Elizabeth Lunbeck, Catharine R. Stimpson, and Londa Schiebinger (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2001).
I'm working on the history of Forest Service management of the land at the Savannah River Site.
I've started research that will probably lead to a biography of Ruth Patrick.
