Stephen J. Klaine, Ph.D.
Welcome to my Teaching and Research Laboratory in the Department of Environmental Toxicology at Clemson University. My students, post-doctoral research associates, staff, collaborators and I invite you to explore this site, learn what we do, and how we may help you. Our interests revolve around environmental education, research, and service.
Our research focuses on the links between land use and water quality. Land management requires the use of chemicals and may result in the migration of those chemicals, as well as eroded soil, into adjacent waterways. These chemicals, including both organic and inorganic contaminants, enter waterways as point and nonpoint source pollutants. Characterizing these chemical burdens is essential for determining exposure and designing bioassays to determine the effects of these contaminants on aquatic organisms. Characterizing the bioavailability of these contaminants is essential to predicting site specific toxicity. All of this information facilitates risk characterization and unacceptable risk requires the development and implemetnation of risk mitigation measures. We work throughout this area conducting fundamental research to solve environmental problems. Please check the links below for specific examples of our research.
